Monofilament wigs offer a unique combination of versatility and durability. A monofilament wig creates the illusion of natural hair growth and allows for multidirectional styling while also providing a cool, smooth feel against the scalp for long lasting comfort.
Monofilament is a sheer mesh made of strong synthetic fiber. In wigs, monofilament is used as a translucent segment - the part area or the entire crown - of a wig cap. Hairs are individually hand tied to the monofilament segment of the cap, so each hair can swivel freely in any direction, creating natural hair movement. This mobility also allows the hair to be parted and styled in any direction.
Sometimes referred to as a “mono top,” a translucent monofilament crown simulates natural hair growth from the scalp. Since each hand tied hair is anchored to an individual spot on the monofilament, and since the monofilament is so sheer, it looks like real hair growth... even close up.
In addition to its amazingly natural appearance, seamless monofilament feels smoother against the scalp than an open wefted crown or a traditional lace backed base. In the case of a double monofilament crown, a second layer of monofilament buffers the layer to which the hair is knotted, so it feels all silky against the scalp.
In general, wigs designated as “monofilament wigs” pair mono tops with open cap construction on the sides and nape, which provides cooling ventilation. Monofilament wigs may feature hand tied lace front hairlines, human hair or Remy human hair.
